The biggest
tourist attraction in Jaisalmer
is the imposing Jaisalmer Fort.
Situated in the middle of the
enormous Thar Desert, the Jaisalmer
Fort is the second oldest fort
in Rajasthan.
Built in 1156, this 250-feet high
fortress is surrounded by a 30-feet
high wall. The Jaisalmer Fort
has 99 citadels and numerous wells
that are big sources of water.
The first of the three walls surrounding
the fort was constructed by a
local Jain panchayat in the 15th
century. The other fortifications
were completed by the Rawals.
There are four gates for the Jaisalmer
Fort. Known as the Akhai Pole,
Suraj Pole, Bhuta Pole and the
Hawa Pole, these gateways were
built to strengthen the defense
system of the fortress.
The fort houses five magnificent
palaces, namely Sarvottam Vilas,
Akhai Vilas, Gaj Mahal, Rang Mahal
and Moti Mahal. Most of these
palaces have exquisite décor,
murals and frescoes-adorned walls
and arches. The balconies of the
rooms of these palaces offer a
spectacular view of the ramparts
and the desert sands.
The Jaisalmer Fort has homes of
merchants and shop owners within
its premises. In fact, one-third
of the population of Jaisalmer
lives in the small houses on the
narrow lanes of the fort.
A camel safari in Jaisalmer takes
you on a round of the fort wherein
you can get soaked in the magnificence
of its still-undiminished beauty.
