Tourist Attractions of Jaipur - Man's
curiosity about the universe and
the entire cosmos is something
as old as time. Over the years,
many attempts have been made to
decipher the mysteries of time
and space. One such example is
the Jantar Mantar in Jaipur, the
largest stone observatory in the
world.
The Jantar Mantar in Jaipur is
one of the five astronomical structures
constructed by Maharaja Sawai
Jai Singh II between 1727 and
1734 AD. A learned astronomer
himself, Sawai Singh was always
fascinated by the positions and
workings of the celestial bodies.
So when he was commissioned to
make corrections in some of the
existing astronomical tables by
Emperor Muhammad Shah, he took
up the task with great eagerness.
As part of his task, Sawai Jai
Singh sent his men to all parts
of the world. These envoys came
back with lots of manuals and
tables on the advancements made
in astronomy. Among them were
the tables formulated by La Hire,
which greatly impressed the king.
Thereafter, he started construction
on the Jantar Mantar by referring
to the data available in the manual.
And when the Jantar Mantar was
finally complete, it was seen
that the Observatory was more
accurate than the table itself.
Located near the gate of the grand
City Palace, the Jantar
Mantar is a must visit site for
anyone. Visitors to this interesting
structure can also have a look
at the various masonry equipments
and astronomical instruments that
give a good idea of what the medieval
man used to think about the universe
and its untold mysteries. No wonder,
the Jantar Mantar is one of the
most visited Tourist Attractions of Jaipur today.
