Tourist Attractions of Ajmer - Held
in memory of the great Sufi saint
Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti, the annual
Urs Festival is one of the most
famous Tourist Attractions of Ajmer. This
six day long affair also commemorates
the last six days of Moinuddin
Chisti's life during which he
retired to his private chambers
for prayer and meditation.
The Urs Festival in Ajmer is considered
to be one of the most important
festivals in the Muslim calendar
and is celebrated with great fervor
all across Ajmer. It begins with
the hoisting of a white flag atop
the Dargah by Sajjada Nashin,
a descendant of the Chisti family.
It is followed by the ghusal ceremony
that involves washing the tomb
of Moinuddin Chisti with rose
water and the offering of sandalwood
paste, ghee and incense.
With pilgrims coming in from all
across the world to pay their
respects to the saint, the Urs
Festival in Tourist Attractions of Ajmer is indeed a grand affair.
Pilgrims also carry many articles
like chadars, flowers, gilaph
and neema to the door of the Dargah
before handing them the khadims
who offer them to the saint's
tomb.
Another important ritual observed
during the Urs Festival is the
preparation of a special milk
pudding that is later distributed
among the devotees at the Dargah.
Qawwali performances are a common
sight to watch during the Urs
Festival. A ghusal ceremony followed
by prayers, poetry competitions
and lighting of firecrackers mark
the last day of the festival.
One of the most unique features
of the Urs Festival is the spirit
of harmony it celebrates. With
people of all faiths thronging
the Dargah to pay their obeisance
to Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti, the
Urs Festival is indeed a wonderful
way to promote universal brotherhood.
