Angelic white Udaipur is an oasis in Rajasthan, India. Tours to Udaipur carry you back in time to an era when the royal family of Mewar lavished the region with architectural gems.
Anointed with sobriquets like 'city of lakes' and 'the city of dawn', Udaipur still retains its imperial fervor.
The 'jewel of Mewar' Udaipur was the capital of the brave Sisodia rulers who've dominated the political and cultural history of Mewar for centuries.
History
Udaipur came into existence in the year 1559 A.D. The initiative to establish Udaipur was taken by Maharana Udai Singji when he was advised by a hermit while on a hunting expedition to set up capital in this region.
Udai Singh constructed the Dhuni Mata Shrine on the very point where he met the holy sage.
The Nouchouki Palace was built to fortify Udaipur. In the later years various rulers who sat on the Mewar throne made architectural additions to the Nouchouki palace leading to the creation of the City Palace Complex.
The pond near the Nouchouki Palace was dug to form a large lake that is known as Lake Pichola. The lake has been a source of water for the inhabitants of Udaipur for years.
