History
The earliest available history records indicate that the region that is Puri was a dense jungle that opened out into the spectacular beach. The area was inhabited by pre-Dravidian tribes, known as Sabaras. In fact the neighboring town, Dantapura was also a part of Puri in the olden days.
Over the years Puri developed into an important center for coastal trade. Rulers from the Ganga dynasty and the 15th century Gajapati rulers had a significant role to play in shaping the political and cultural history of Puri in Orissa, India.

Jagannath Temple

Gundicha Temple
Gundicha temple is one of the most renowned temples in Puri, located on the northeastern side of the Jagannath temple.
The origin of the temple can be traced back to the sixteenth century. During the Rath Yatra, the idols of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra are seated on ornately decorated chariots and taken to the Gundicha Mandir only.
Swargadwar Beach
Swargadwar Beach is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Puri, located at a distance of approximately two kilometers from the Jagannath Temple.
This place holds great religious significance for people, as it used to be the bathing place of Sri Chaitanyadev, a renowned prophet of the Vaishnava sect.
