Tour Nalanda - a rustic village located at a distance of 90 kilometers from Patna, the capital of Bihar, India.
An important Buddhist pilgrimage destination, Nalanda today is a deserted village scattered with ancient ruins located close to the Baragaon village.
The term Nalanda literally translates to "a region that confers the lotus." This ancient city was an important center of Buddhist learning in between the 5th and 12th centuries.
History
History records indicate that the city of Nalanda was established sometime in the 5th century B.C.
Rock edicts indicate that Lord Buddha visited Nalanda several times during his lifetime, though the region became famous only after the establishment of the Nalanda University. The region was also visited by Vardhaman Mahavira on several occasions.
The Nalanda University flourished for more than 700 years and reached its pinnacle of glory under the patronage of Gupta rulers.
Great Scholars like Huen Tsang who was a student at this great center of learning left detailed records of the university as it existed in the 7th century.
Nalanda Archaeological Museum
Nalanda Archaeological Museum is opposite to the entrance of the ruins of the university. The museum is small yet has a valuable collection of Buddhist and Hindu bronzes and a number of intact statues of the Lord Buddha found in the area.
Two large terracotta jars belonging to the 1st century AD are intact and exhibited in a shaded enclosure behind the museum.
The other items in the museum include the copper plates, stone inscriptions, coins, pottery and samples of burnt rice of 12th century AD.
Nava Nalanda Mahavihara
Nava Nalanda Mahavihara is an institute devoted to the study and research of Pali Literature and Buddhism. It is a new institute, where students from foreign countries also come to study.
