History
According to an old legend, King Cheraman Perumal of Kerala embraced Islam and secretly set sail for Mecca sometime during the 9th century.
His disciple, the Raja of Kolathiri send some soldiers on a ship to trace him and bring him back but the ship got struck in a storm and nearly sank.
The survivors sailed to an uninhabited Island (Bangaram). Later these soldiers reported the existence of these islands to the king who announced that those who settled in these parts would automatically get the right of ownership.
Explorers and travelers such as Al Biruni, Marco Polo and Abu Zayad mention the existence of these islands in their manuscripts.
